What is the difference between automated and manual classification? Can both be used simultaneously?

Siberson Veriket Data Classification supports four operating modes, which can be deployed independently or in combination depending on the organization's maturity, workflow requirements, and risk tolerance:

  • Automated classification: The system analyzes document content and context at the point of creation, modification, or access — and automatically assigns the appropriate sensitivity label based on configured policies and AI-driven analysis. No user action required. Recommended for high-volume data environments.
  • Manual classification: Users apply sensitivity labels themselves through the Microsoft Office ribbon add-in, the Windows/macOS/Linux right-click context menu, or other integration points. Appropriate for environments where user judgment should remain part of the classification decision.
  • Policy-enforced mandatory classification: Organizations configure policies that require users to classify documents before saving, sharing, or sending. Users cannot bypass this requirement without selecting an appropriate label.
  • Hybrid mode: Automated classification provides a recommended label, which users can accept, override with justification, or elevate — combining the efficiency of automation with the contextual judgment of the individual user. This is the most commonly deployed configuration in enterprise environments.

📌 Policy Enforcement

When a user selects a classification label inconsistent with the detected content — for example, marking a document containing PII as "Public" — Siberson Veriket Data Classification can warn the user, require a justification, or prevent the action entirely, depending on the policy configuration. This enforces classification integrity without fully removing user agency.
